Your Liberal Arts program in S茫o Paulo lasts a full semester and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds who have Portuguese language skills. You will enroll in host institution courses delivered in Portuguese and online courses taught through 91茄子's global academic partner, ASU.   • All S茫o Paulo Liberal Arts students enroll in 4-6 courses for a total of 15-18 semester credits, choosing from:
    • A minimum of 15 credits at Pontif铆cia Universidade Cat贸lica de S茫o Paulo (PUC) taught in Portuguese
    • Up to one ASU online courses (max 3 total credits)
      • Students can select ASU Session A in the Spring & ASU Session A and B in the Fall

PUC Courses: 2-4 U.S. semester/3-6 quarter credits; 32-68 contact hours鈥 

Course Credit

  • PUC-SP Courses: Typically, 3-4 U.S. semester/4.5-6 quarter credits; 45-72 contact hours鈥

Academic Culture

Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Sao Paulo: The academic culture at PUC emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and social responsibility. Students will engage in lectures, discussions and experiential learning opportunities that connect to real-world applications. 

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You鈥檒l receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Sao Paulo: PUC-SP courses typically follow a Brazilian academic calendar, with classes meeting two to three times per week. Course schedules vary, with classes held in the morning, afternoon, or evening, allowing students to balance academic commitments with cultural immersion and extracurricular activities. Students are expected to dedicate significant time outside of class for readings, group work, and independent study. Participation and critical analysis are highly valued, and assessments often include written assignments, presentations, and exams. 

Attendance is mandatory, and students are encouraged to actively engage in academic discussions and collaborative projects. 

ASU online courses meet in 鈥渟essions鈥 that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 91茄子 courses begin or end.

Grading

PUC-SP: The grading scale ranges from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest achievable grade. The passing grade is 5.0, except for undergraduate programs in Law and Administration, where it is 6.0. Students must attend at least 75% of classes.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. 鈥淧ass/fail鈥 or 鈥淎udit鈥 is not allowed for 91茄子 students.
